For our friend to be able to kiss the scientist, she will have to share it with two scientists, Dieter Manstein from Massachusetts General Hospital and Rox Anderson from Harvard Medical School. The origin of the entire idea was an observation that was made about children who sucked on popsicles. It was observed that they lost fat in their cheeks. The brilliant idea came to try this on fat without harming surrounding tissue, causing frostbite or damage to skin and other cells. Finally, Dr. Manstein and Dr. Anderson created their first CoolSculpting prototype and put it through clinical trials in 2008.
The idea is that fat cells die off and are carried away and are eliminated by the body, when frozen at a certain temperature range. The temperature range used with CoolSculpting does not freeze the surrounding non-fat cells. The removal of fat cells improves the appearance in that area, defining muscle and flattening trouble areas that will not be reduced through exercise or diet.
The great thing about it is, if a healthy lifestyle is maintained and the patient does not revert to bad eating and poor exercise habits, then the fat is gone permanently, never to come back. Unlike dieting only, which reduces the size of existing fat cells, doing nothing to reduce the number of cells.
