What You Need To Know About CoolSculpting

Age, genetics, and other reasons completely unrelated to overall fitness often make it hard to reduce pockets of belly fat. The stakes for your health are high, because evidence suggests that abdominal obesity is the worst kind of obesity. Midsection fat often causes significant self-esteem issues as well. People who cannot lose the weight despite strict diet and regular exercise often feel like failures, and the fat bulges are extremely unsightly, a fact that makes many people very self-conscious.

If diet and exercise alone are not enough, and other procedures, such as aggressive gastric bypass surgery, are not an option for whatever reason, CoolSculpting may be the answer. Many people see noticeable results after just four weeks, and a single treatment usually prompts up to six months of continuous weight loss in the midsection or other treated area.

Cryolipolysis is a great supplement to, but not a replacement for, a healthy lifestyle.

The Procedure

Extreme cold kills cells. Once the wind chill factor gets below zero, frostbite can affect exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Fat cells are even more susceptible to extreme cold than other cells, which means that the temperature does not have to be as cold for as long to kill these cells.

Truth be told, when the Food and Drug Administration first approved CoolSculpting in 2010, the procedure was very uncomfortable. In many cases, doctors did little more than place extremely cold chemical ice packs on the patient’s abdomen. Even worse, because the cold was generalized instead of targeted, the results usually were less than stellar.

Today, over three million people have undergone cryolipolysis, so the procedure is obviously much more sophisticated. Moreover, targeted CoolSculpting treatments kill up to a third of the fat cells in the treated area. Depending on the treated area, the in-office procedure takes between one and three hours. Patients experience almost no lingering discomfort and most immediately return to their normal activities.

Actual weight loss occurs over a period of several months because that’s how long it take the body to flush out these dead fat cells through apoptosis, which is a natural process of cell death.
